Young child injured in Memorial Day fire

The Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office reports that shortly before 1:30am on Memorial Day, they responded to a structure fire on Gibson Creek in Oakville.

According to officials, deputies arrived on scene and firefighters were putting out a fire that was burning a 20’ by 30’ shed that was being used as residence by a married couple and their 8 month old son.

Undersheriff Brad Johansson tells KXRO that the infant was sleeping in the shed when the fire was discovered, while the parents were in the main residence, located next to the shed when the fire started.

The father, a 44 year old male, reportedly went into the burning structure to rescue the boy.

The infant suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.

The father sustained less serious burns and was transported to the hospital where he was treated and released.

Investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire, although Johansson says that iInvestigators have said they had initially seen nothing suspicious about the fire in their investigation.
