State Parks to host meeting on Twin Harbors campground relocation
Westport, WA – Washington State Parks is inviting the public to learn more about plans to close the campground on the east side of Twin Harbors State Park and replace it with new sites on the west side of State Route 105.
The meeting will be held from 6 – 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 12, at the Westport Maritime Museum, 2201 Westhaven Drive, Westport. (Driving directions.)
The meeting is part of the pre-design planning process for the park. Staff will describe the challenges of managing the annual flooding of campsites on the east side and present options for improvements.
During the meeting, participants may ask questions of staff and provide written comments.
State Parks says the primary purpose of the project is to build new campground facilities on higher ground away from the existing site, which is subject to annual flooding.
Updated campsites will include a mix of electric and water hookup sites, rustic tent camping sites and possibly new cabins.
New restrooms with showers are also being considered.
They say relocating the campground has the added benefit of placing overnight visitors closer to the ocean and will eliminate the need for campers to cross the highway to get to the ocean beach.
A preliminary recommendation for a preferred alternative will be made available online in August.
Park staff will submit a pre-design report to the Washington State Office of Financial Management, based on several considerations and public feedback, including an analysis of:
- Constructability and cost estimates
- Compatibility with the natural environment
- Recreational access improvements
