Sheriff Whelan in his final week of service

Starting Monday, Sheriff Mike Whelan will simply be Mike. As of October 1st, his retirement will have officially started. On Friday, law enforcement from around the area met to honor Whelan in Montesano.

The Grays Harbor Democrats will nominate up to 3 candidates for the position at their next scheduled meeting the first week of October and present them to the County Commissioners.

Whelan announced his retirement from the Sheriff’s Office in August after 35 years of service. Whelan started at the office in July of 1977 along with current Undersheriff Rick Scott. Scott will serve as Interim County Sheriff until an official announcement is made for the position.
