Search continues today for man in Hoquiam River

The search continues today for a man in the Hoquiam River.

Wednesday morning, Hoquiam Police officers were called about a suspicious vehicle near Sanderling Drive off the East Hoquiam Road.

As an officer was responding, he saw a 35 year old Hoquiam man on Broadway Avenue with an outstanding felony warrant for his arrest from the Department of Corrections.

When the officer tried to contact the man, the 35 year old jumped into the Hoquiam River and tried to swim across.

The officer said that the man looked to be wearing a heavy coat and backpack when he jumped in.

As he reached the middle of the river, the man grabbed onto a piling.  Before any officers could reach him, the man “pushed off of the piling” and submerged.

They did not see him re-surface.

Responders from the Cosmopolis Fire Department, Grays Harbor County Sheriff’s Office, a US Coast Guard helicopter, and a civilian joined Hoquiam PD and conducted a search and rescue mission.

They searched until the afternoon, but were unable to locate the man.

The Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office dive team will be joining the search today.
