Public comment period ends today for EIS on crude by rail

doeThe scoping period for the Environmental Impact Study for projects that would bring crude oil to the Port of Grays Harbor ends today.

With the scoping period for the Environmental Impact Study ending, Hoquiam City Administrator Brian Shay says they have received hundreds of comments in written and web form alone, and more are on the way.

Shay said that they have received over 200 written and online comments alone, not including comments from public meetings. Over 18,000 additional comments are expected from an environmental group.

Shay also says the public comment period that he thinks will be key, is when the draft of the EIS is finished and opens to the public.

Once the draft EIS is released, the public will have an additional public comment periods will be scheduled.

Residents have until today to comment to the Department of Ecology and the City of Hoquiam on what should be studied in environmental impact statements for proposals by Westway Terminal and Imperium Renewables.

A third project by US Development Group is also currently in the planning stages.
