Multiple daytime closures planned for the Chehalis River Bridge

Drivers who use the US 101 Chehalis River Bridge in Aberdeen should plan extra time into their daytime commutes from Tuesday, April 14, through Thursday April 16.

Washington State Department of Transportation bridge maintenance crews will close the US 101 Chehalis River Bridge for 10-minute intervals multiple times between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day. US 101 traffic will be allowed to cross the bridge after each 10-minute closure. The closures will allow bridge maintenance crews to safely and thoroughly clean the 60-year-old bridge.

This in-depth level of cleaning is in addition to annual bridge flushing performed by bridge crews, and is required about every five years. Crews will focus their cleaning activities on tightly-confined areas of the bridge that house the moving mechanisms and gears that control openings for marine traffic. For the safety of the crews, the work must be done during daylight.

The cleaning extends the life of the bridge by reducing steel corrosion and allowing for more thorough bridge inspections.
