Montesano, WA – Free kids fishing is returning to Lake Sylvia this weekend.

Washington State Parks will be inviting kids 15 and under to the lake this weekend to take part in the annual Kids Fishing Derby at Lake Sylvia State Park, sponsored by the Montesano Moose Lodge/

All kids 15 and under are invited to participate in the free event on June 8th, between 6am – 11am.

In past years, pre-registration was available the night before from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, June 9, at the Montesano Moose Lodge, 3 Monte Elma Rd., Montesano.

Prizes will be awarded to kids ages: 13-15 years, 10 – 12 years, 7 – 9 years, and 6 years & under.

This event coincides with a State Parks Free Day, when a Discover Pass will not be required to visit the lake.

Fish will be planted at Lake Sylvia the evening prior to the event to better acclimate them to the lake.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife tells KXRO that Lake Sylvia will close to fishing at 6pm. on Friday, June 7 through 6am Saturday, June 8 to prepare for the event.

They say “this rule change is necessary to ensure a safe and successful kids’ fishing event.”

The WDFW says organizers of this event donate time, effort, and money to raise and stock trout in Lake Sylvia, and help with other fishing events in local lakes.

The expected participation for this year’s event is about 350 kids.

Lake Sylvia is open year-round with the exception of this closure.
