FOODBALL 2008 KICKOFF
By Ian Cope :: 585 Views ::

It was an event that started with the modest goal of re-invigorating the Aberdeen-Hoquiam High School rivalry.  However, in 28 years it has grown to one of the most worthwhile competitions to be found.  Foodball 2008 kicks off today with dances, powderpuff football and a kickball match-up.  Events like those were far from the mind of former KXRO Traffic Director Jill Bellis when she created Foodball in 1980, hoping to respark the Myrtle Street Rivalry that she felt had been diminished by the Turkey Day football game moving to earlier in the year. That first year saw 16 days of food gathering yield 12-tons of food for area food banks.  Since that first year, Foodball has gone on to gather over 14 million pounds of food, including a record 1,062,989 combined pounds last year.  The cash and food gathering will culminate with the weigh-in at the PUD on November 17th at 5 pm and the crowning of a new champion, although all agree that there really are no losers in this event.
