LANDS COMMISSIONER TOUTS DNR ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND STORM RECOVERY AID

Doug Sutherland is only the fourth person to hold the title of Commissioner of Public Lands in the 50-year history of the Department of Natural Resources. Tuesday evening he was in Aberdeen touting not only the overall job the agency has done in that half-century, but its efforts to quickly respond to last December's major storm. Sutherland says photographs and maps of the timber blowdown areas will be on the agency's new Web site, a technological advantage denied to previous agencies that will prove an invaluable resource as the state continues to work on storm recovery. Sutherland also noted the agency's increased role as a facilitator for outdoor recreation, a role not envisioned when Bert Cole became the first Lands Commissioner in 1957. The Aberdeen meeting was one of 13 the agency is having around the state to celebrate its 50th anniversary. |
