DOT REPORT LISTS 12 HARBOR BRIDGES AS STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT
By Ian Cope :: 309 Views ::

When a Minneapolis bridge collapsed one year ago, killing 13 people, Gov. Chris Gregoire and other Washington state leaders called the tragedy a wake-up call and vowed to tackle this state's overdue bridge projects.

But 12 months later, progress is just inching forward, especially for the area's most worrisome structures ... the Alaskan Way Viaduct along Seattle's Elliott Bay waterfront and the State Highway 520 floating bridge across Lake Washington.

An Associated Press analysis of the state's 20 most-traveled bridges with structural deficiencies found that just one of the 20 has been repaired. Another three spans received a partial fix.

The state Department of Transportation has published its own list of 142 state-owned bridges with structural deficiencies, including updated plans for replacements, fixes or monitoring. 12 of  those bridges are located in Grays Harbor county and include the Heron Street Bridge in Aberdeen, the Simpson Avenue Bridge in Hoquiam and the SR 107 Chehalis River Bridge in  Montesano.

Structurally deficient means that a bridge requires repair or replacement of a certain component, such as cracked or spalled concrete or the entire bridge itself.  Being structurally deficient does not imply that the bridge is in danger of collapse or unsafe to the traveling public.
