PUD AND BPA DISCUSS PULP MILL PARTNERSHIP

Representatives from the Bonneville Power Administration met with Grays Harbor PUD officials on Monday in an attempt to clear one of the final barriers in the re-opening of the Cosmopolis Pulp Mill. The partnership of the PUD with Evergreen Pulp would allow the district to operate the electricity generating turbines at the mill and sell the power on the open market while using less expensive power from the BPA to operate the mill itself, an arrangement the BPA has balked at supporting. However, PUD Community Relations Director Liz Anderson says the meeting between the two sides allowed the district to better explain their goals to the BPA group, which included Administrator Steve Wright. Anderson says the PUD is hopeful that an answer from Bonneville may be received as soon as Wednesday. Prior to the meeting, Wright and Governor Chris Gregoire toured the Cosmopolis facility. While neither side has committed to a firm day, both Weyerhaeuser and Evergreen Pulp have said a final agreement on the mill's sale could be just days away. |
