AHS STUDENT BANKING IS A HIT

With the opening of the new JM Weatherwax High School came a new opportunity for students: on campus banking run and operated by students. After one year, the AHS Twin Harbors Credit Union branch is being heralded as a success. Instructor Tara Johnson says the 40 students in the banking and finance class have responded so well, that seven of them placed in the top 25-percent of the 46-thousand students nationwide who took a required financial literacy exam. Branch Manager Kyndal Van de Veur says in addition to servicing students and faculty, the students also assist in teaching a class at Miller Junior High School, teaching students that math is not only useful but at times can be fun. Those thoughts were seconded by student Sara Alstrom, who says the course teaches more than just banking, but also skills students will need after they graduate. It also helped Alstrom and three other students earn paid year long internships, part of the partnership that will be continued after a very successful first year. |
