AQUIFER MORATORIUM ENTERING LAST MONTHS?

After over one year of study and debate it appears development may be allowed again on the Wildcat Creek aquifer. On Monday, the Grays Harbor County Commissioners accepted a study from consultant Jim Arthur on the best ways to move forward with development north and west of McCleary without harming the cities water source. Arthur's conclusions indicate that the watershed is actually in good shape and that with some joint steps taken by the county and city, development should be allowed to continue. One of the main steps would be the creation on a joint city/county board to oversee the aquifer. Each jurisdiction will also have their own responsibilities. Commissioner Bob Beerbower says for the county, it will include amending the county code for critical areas and setting forth requirements and responsibilities for development on the aquifer. For the City of McCleary and Administrator Busse Nutley, the steps will include designating the well head as a critical area, better monitoring and continuing efforts to reduce per capita water consumption. A 60 day comment period will now begin with the county accepting comment from the public. If all goes well, Nutley says the development moratorium could be lifted by mid to late August. |
