WATER QUALITY THREATENS SHELLFISH
By Dave Wilkins :: 49 Views ::

The state Health Department released its annual Shellfish Growing Areas water quality report this week. The report notes that many sources, natural and man-made, can contribute to water problems--in Grays Harbor, in particular, flooding in the Chehalis River is a major factor.

The worst areas of Grays Harbor were right in the middle, at a sampling station just off Sand Island, and near the South Channel at another station several hundred yards off the mouth of the Johns River at Markham. Grays Harbor's threatened areas don't compare to Pacific County, however, where portions of the Naselle River have now been closed to shellfish growers for failing state water quality standards, and the rich Bay Center shellfish areas are threatened much like Grays Harbor... and if you like to indulge in a little schadenfreude, consider this: the report shows that Puget Sound pollution levels are continuing to increase, especially in areas bordering King and Pierce counties.
