OCEAN SHORES GEARS UP FOR THE FOURTH By Ian Cope on Monday, June 30, 2008

The Ocean Shores fire and police departments are gearing up for the 4th of July weekend. Last year the fire and police departments responded to nine reports of fires that included a 40 acre dune grass fire that caused the evacuation of several beachfront homes. Fire agencies from throughout the county responded to assist. The fires were attributed to illegal fireworks.

 In an effort to prevent a similar occurrence this year, the fire and police departments of Ocean Shores have implemented a strategy to combat the danger.

The Bonneville Power Administration has issued a favorable ruling in the Grays Harbor PUD's desire to generate electricity at the Cosmopolis Pulp Mill for sale on the open market.  PUD Community Relations Director Liz Anderson says the BPA ruling clears a large hurdle in the sale of the mill to the PUD-Evergreen Pulp partnership.

The Aberdeen City Council has passed a committee report that will clear the way for the city to debate an ordinance to increase utility taxes.  The nearly $500-thousand dollars raised annually by the 4.5-percent increase in sewer, stormwater, garbage and water rates would be used for long overdue street repairs.

Junk boats along the Hoquiam and Chehalis Rivers may soon be a thing of the past.  Hoquiam Administrator Brian Shay says the city is anxious to take advantage of a Department of Natural Resources guarantee to fund the $400-thousand removal of the derelict "Northern Retriever" from the mud near Renne Island.  However, Shay says a DNR program to fund smaller boat removal should allow the city to take care of three other nautical eyesores cluttering the city shoreline.

The City of Hoquiam is adjusting the dates on which fireworks can be set off.  Previously, fireworks had been allowed in Hoquiam from June 28 through July 5th.  Under the new rules, fireworks will be allowed only on July 3rd and 4th and on the evening of December 31st.

Hoquiam police have arrested a 39-year old man for allegedly beating his girlfriend.  Deputy Chief Jim Maloney says a friend of the victim called the police and reported the assault on Thursday morning.  When officers arrived at the Ecklund Avenue home, the suspect told them that he had beaten the woman after a night of drinking, but that he could not remember the incident and could not say why he did it other than to say "it felt like a dream"

HOGANS CORNER WATER PROJECT READY TO BEGIN By Ian Cope on Tuesday, June 17, 2008


Four wells at Hogans Corner near Ocean Shores will be developed to provide water service to the Quinault Casino, Ocean City State Park and the City of Ocean Shores.  Commissioner Al Carter and his fellow County Commissioner signed off on engineering contracts on Monday to complete design, permitting and bidding which will allow the construction work on the well system to begin.  Carter says the $5-million project should be complete next summer, ending a process that began in 1998.

PUD TO ADJUST RATES By Ian Cope on Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Grays Harbor PUD customers may notice changes in their power bills this September. The PUD Board of Commissioners approved revised rate structures at the June 16, 2008 Commission meeting. The restructured rates more closely reflect the actual cost of providing power to each customer group or "rate class." The new rate structures are not rate increases. In fact, for most residential customers, the new rate structures will mean their overall cost will go down.  The revised rate structures are intended to be "revenue neutral" by collecting the same amount of revenue from all customers as was previously collected. Depending on their electricity use, customers may see their bills decrease; others will notice no change and some customers may see an increase.
